One Incident, many learnings !
In the Mahabharata, Balarama decides not to participate in the Kurukshetra war alongside Duryodhana, the leader of the Kuru clan. Instead, he embarks on a pilgrimage journey to avoid any conflicts with his brother, Lord Krishna, who supports the Pandavas. On the final day (18th day) of the Kurukshetra war, Balarama returns and coincidentally witnesses the fierce duel between Bhima and Duryodhana, both of whom he mentored.
As the battle between these two formidable warriors unfolds, it initially tilts in Duryodhana’s favor. However, the tide turns when Krishna signals Bhima, who then strikes Duryodhana on his thighs with his heavy mace, a move considered against the rules of fair combat in those times. Witnessing this violation, an enraged Balarama decides to strike Bhima with his plough. Krishna immediately intervenes, reminding Balarama of Duryodhana’s past hostility towards the Pandavas and Balarama’s own decision not to participate in the war. This reminder prompts Balarama to lower his plough, adhering to his stance of neutrality.
This incident offers profound insights into leadership responsibilities and life lessons. Here is my interpretation:
Leadership and Fair Play: Balarama’s reaction serves as a reminder that leaders must not only guide their followers but also ensure they adhere to the principles of righteousness and fairness.
Decision-Making under Pressure: Krishna’s swift intervention to prevent Balarama from striking Bhima underscores the importance of decisive action in crises situation.
Conflict Resolution: Krishna’s role in this scenario highlights the importance of conflict resolution skills.
Mentorship: Balarama’s reaction to Bhima’s unfair move demonstrates his accountability as a mentor, reminding leaders to hold their team members accountable for their actions.
Duties & Responsibilities: Krishna’s message to Balarama emphasizes that shying away from duties and responsibilities at crucial moments can lead to a loss of credibility when challenging situations arise later.
This incident underscores the importance of adhering to rules and fairness, even in the face of adversity, and highlights the role of a leader in upholding these values and setting an example for others.
